Anti-DEA Rallies Held Over Medical Marijuana Enforcement

A judge in Grand Rapids has postponed a hearing to determine if the state should cooperate with a federal subpoena seeking medical marijuana records. The delay was due to a last-minute request to intervene by a group called “the Michigan association of compassion clubs.” The Drug Enforcement Administration won’t talk about the Lansing-area probe, but will say they’re not cracking down on medical marijuana users.

More than 45,000 people in Michigan are registered to use marijuana legally. The postponement of that scheduled hearing almost foiled the plans of medical marijuana advocates. Members of “Americans for safe access” coordinated nationwide rallies in Las Vegas, Grand Rapids and Lansing to coincide with the hearing. The Grand Rapids rally was canceled, but the Las Vegas and Lansing ones went off without a hitch.

Medical marijuana advocates from the Lansing area made some noise. They’re raising their voices against what they call increasing federal involvement in states where medical marijuana is legal. Many have personal ties to the issue.

John Roberts, protestor: “I’ve been raided twice. First time they raided me they didn’t even take the plants, they took all the medicine we made for the patients.”

John Roberts is a medical marijuana user, caregiver and advocate. He says the feds need to stay out of the confidential records of medical marijuana users. Americans for safe access spokesperson Robin Schneider says the bigger issue at play here is state’s rights.

Robin Schneider, spkprsn Americans for safe access: “63 percent of Michiganders voted to allow for the use of medicinal marijuana and it’s time for the federal government to take a step back and allow us to engage of the use of medical marijuana peacefully and privately.”

The protestors called on State Attorney General Bill Schuette to stand up for their rights. Schuette could not be reached for comment. There were only a couple of dozen people who attended the rally in Lansing. Organizers attribute that to the cold weather. They expect more people to come to rallies they may hold in the summer months.

Marijuana Activists Call On President Obama To Pardon Canadian Pot Prisoner

Seattle area marijuana activists will gather outside the Federal Courthouse at 700 Stewart Street on Friday, September 10, to protest the sentencing of Marc Emery, the so-called Prince of Pot, who faces five years in federal prison for selling marijuana seeds by mail order to Americans and to call on President Barack Obama to pardon him. The controversial Canadian faced federal charges after DEA agents entered Canada and arrested Emery in 2005. Emery is expected to be sentenced to five years in federal prison under a plea agreement reached with federal prosecutors.

“The Emery case is a prime example of the overreach of the federal government and the need for marijuana laws that match social reality in America,” said Philip Dawdy, Sensible Washington’s co-founder and vice-chair. “It’s crazy that he’s going to prison for selling seeds and that the federal government is willing to spend millions of dollars prosecuting and imprisoning him. President Obama should pardon Emery and get busy with reforming America’s outdated marijuana laws.”

When Emery was arrested in 2005, federal officials described his arrest as a blow to efforts to legalize marijuana in the US. Emery was the publisher of the Vancouver-based Cannabis Culture magazine and planned to use his seed-selling profits to fund legalization efforts in the US.

Activists will gather outside the US Courthouse from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday while Emery, already in federal detention in SeaTac, is being sentenced. Continue reading

Reddit Fights Back over Marijuana Legalization Ads

reddit.com/r/trees

Quirky social-news site Reddit always seemed an unusual acquisition for Manhattan media giant Conde Nast, and it’s never been more evident: asked by Conde Nast overlords to stop running advertisements on behalf of advocates of California’s Proposition 19, which supports the legalization of marijuana, Reddit decided they’d do it anyway.

Because Conde Nast said its main concern was obtaining revenue from those controversial advocacy groups, Reddit’s solution was that they would simply run the ads for free.

“This was a decision made at the highest levels of Conde Nast,” an announcement from Reddit read. “Reddit itself strongly disagrees with it and, frankly, thinks it’s ridiculous that we’re turning away advertising money…We’re trying to convince Corporate that they’re making the wrong decision here, and we encourage the community to create a petition, so that your anger is organized in a way that will produce results.”

Conde Nast’s official response: “As a corporation, Conde Nast does not want to benefit financially from this particular issue.”

Reddit’s users, many of whom are outspoken marijuana legalization advocates themselves (Reddit operates a sub-site called “Trees,” devoted to weed-related news), had been up in arms over the decision. Dozens of users said that they would be instituting ad-blocking software in protest. Recently, pro-legalization ads have been making headlines because of the revelation that while Google’s policies are relatively liberal, Facebook will ban ads that contain images of “drug paraphernalia, or tobacco.” The iconic green cannabis leaf doesn’t make the cut.

This is the second time in fewer than two months that Reddit has vocally expressed dissatisfaction with its Conde Nast parentage. Last month, the site put out a call for user donations to help make changes, claiming that Conde Nast’s budget allotments to Reddit wouldn’t cover them.

Investigators Raid Medical Marijuana Protest Organizer

The medical marijuana patient and caretaker who organized a protest outside the Saginaw County Courthouse last week, says investigators raided his home Tuesday.

Thomas Township resident John Roberts organized the protest, accusing The Saginaw County Sheriff of raiding patients and caretakers. Protesters came from around the state, some holding signs reading, “Learn the Law.”

Roberts, who is vice president of the Tri-City Compassion Club, said at the protest, “Our patients had to suffer because they don’t believe in it. I don’t give a rat’s {expletive} what they believe in.”

Wednesday Roberts told NBC25 he believes investigators raided his home in retaliation. He says now he has patients who will suffer.

Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel says his department had nothing to do with the raid, and that it was part of a federal investigation.

Activist Assaulted by Police at ‘Free Marc’ Protest [video]

Written by CANNABIS CULTURE – A “Free Marc” campaign organizer was arrested Thursday, June 10th at the Niagara Falls office of Canadian Justice Minister Rob Nicholson in what activists are calling “assault and police intimidation.”

Jacob Hunter, Policy Director of the Beyond Prohibition Foundation and organizer of recent Conservative MP office occupation protests, was accosted by a police officer while attempting to walk through the front door of the Member of Parliament’s constituency office in Ontario. Hunter was there as part of a continuing series of protests being held at the offices of Conservative Members of Parliament by supporters of Marc Emery, and was joined by a group of activists including Jodie Emery.

Hunter was reportedly arrested for “assaulting a police officer”. Activists said another individual was also arrested at the scene.

Several other activists gathered around Hunter as officers prepared to put him in a police vehicle. Activist Eric Compton attempted to use the “hug power” technique by wrapping his arms around Hunter, but police aggressively grabbed him and slammed him on the hood of one of their cars.”

Global Marijuana March 2010

Four Twenty is behind us, and it’s time to take the momentum of awareness we received on that day and push forward. As most of you know, The Worldwide – or Global – Marijuana March is happening on May 1st. According to The Worldwide Marijuana March website, 300 cities have signed up to participate on 6 continents. Be sure to check the site to find the city closest to you.

Marijuana websites all over the world got crushed with traffic on 4/20/10, and news services everywhere ran stories about the stoner holiday. But we cannot rest for one minute. Every day, people’s lives are ruined by jail time or an inability to get their medicine.

These people count on us – the marijuana activists – to get their message out to the masses.not just on special days, but every day. Yet the mainstream media coverage we get on days like 4-20 and 5-1 cannot be discounted; it is on those days that we reach the most people with the plight of those who cannot fight this battle alone.

It is on those days that we must yell the loudest.
